Why does a lack of sleep contribute to weight gain?
A lot of us don’t get nearly enough sleep to stay healthy. We live in a fast-paced society. There’s always something else you could be accomplishing, always another item on the to-do list. People sacrifice sleep in order to get more done all the time! It may seem as though our bodies are well able to adapt to a lack of sleep – but this is not the case.
When your body doesn’t have enough sleep, it automatically responds to the lack of energy as a stressor. This includes producing the anti-stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol creates quite a few undesirable symptoms in the body – one of them being an increase in the rate of fat storage.

With a malfunctioning release of leptin, your body might THINK that it needs to eat more – even though it really doesn’t. Getting more sleep may increase your self-control when it comes to food.
Sleep is a beautiful thing! It is a chance to refresh and restart your day. You can let go of worry, turn off your nagging concerns for a few hours. Why are we treating it so flippantly?
