When you hear someone say “I Somersize”, you may be wondering what they could possibly mean. When you find out that the term is directly related to well-known actress Suzanne Somers, it can be even more confusing.

When people say that they Somersize, they are talking about a specific way of eating to lose and maintain weight, popularized by Suzanne Somers in a series of books. This weight loss program is about food combining, cutting certain foods out of your diet completely and putting emphasis on eating other kinds of foods.

First and foremost, if you decide that you want to try to Somersize, it means cutting foods such as sugar and refined flour completely out of your diet. It would be hard to find fault with this; it’s well documented that these foods not only contain empty calories, but they can also be detrimental to your health. When you eat carbs on this diet, you eat complex carbs. Second, you have to follow some guidelines that can take a while to get used to.

When you Somersize, you do not eat carbs with fats or proteins, although you can eat them with vegetables. You can eat proteins, fats and vegetables together, and this includes things such as cheese, butter, sour cream and heavy cream. Fruit must be eaten alone.

Carb meals or snacks can’t be eaten within two hours of protein/fat meals, and vice versa. Neither type of meal can be eaten within 20 minutes after eating fruit.

What does all of this have to do with losing weight? Obviously, a lot. People are reporting great success with this diet, and one of the things that they love about it is that they don’t have to count calories or carbs; they simply have to follow the rules.

People who Somersize do better with support, especially because this way of eating can often be confusing. Support groups and online forums can be an invaluable way to keep the incentive going and to have the feeling of community that can help so much.
