Why is it so easy to gain weight? It seems like everyone is becoming obese and at a rapid rate. It is seen in adults and now in kids. It's really a sad thing. I hate seeing people struggle with their weight and self-image. Nobody wakes up one day and says, "hmm I think I'm going to try and get fat from here on out!" No, that's not what happens. More than likely they got there at a very slow undetected rate.

I believe we are set up for failure. There are so many fad diets out there and so much false information it can be a challenge to lose weight the right way.

Most people go from regular coke to diet coke, thinking they are one the right track. We eat a ton of sugar free, and fat free products. See, you would think sugar free and fat free foods would be the way to go. Not at all, these foods will make you gain weight! Think about how many skinny people you see drinking diet coke? More than likely you don't. They are probably overweight and caught in a vicious cycle.

Sugar free and fat free foods are a major player in our obesity today. We have been led to believe these foods will help us lose weight and be healthier. This could not be further from the truth. Eat enough of these "diet foods" and you'll find yourself being insulin resistant with type 2 diabetes.

Sugar free products contain artificial sweeteners which can be toxic to your body! Instead of eating something with sugar in it, food companies simply replace it with artificial sweeteners to give it taste. Aspartame is among one of them. Aspartame can cause cancer, diabetes, obesity, headaches, seizures and blindness.

Some sugar free products can be thousands of times sweeter than regular sugar, so your body thinks it getting the sugar except there are no calories to go with the sweetness. This is a major problem because now your body thinks it can consume anything that's sweet and have no consequences. So you're basically disarming your body's defense mechanism. When you go to eat foods that have sugar in them your body does not recognize the calories along with it. Your body thinks its calorie free which will promote weight gain.

Fat free foods have led people to believe it will help them lose weight. In all reality it's the opposite. Technically the hot dog should just be protein and fat. Let's say you buy a fat free hot dog and examine the label. Since they take out the fat, which is where the great hot dog taste comes from, they have to add taste back into it. They actually add sugar into your hot dog. So now your hotdog is jacked with carbs and sugar. Now when you eat it, it is quickly absorbed and sugar is released into your bloodstream at a rapid pace. Making you get fat once again.

We simply need to stay away from these "diet foods". They are making us sick and overweight! Here's my solution.

Start drinking a lot of water in place of coke or diet coke. Try to get eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. If you don't like the plain taste, add a lemon slice for a natural diuretic or simply add an Emergen-C packet for 1,000 mg vitamin C.

Eat high fiber whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Try brown rice, sweet potatoes, oatmeal and whole grain breads. These foods will keep you fuller longer and keep the fat off. You should eat a good amount of vegetables and fruit in moderation.

Instead of fat free products, eat foods that are low in fat or reduced fat. People we need fat in our diet. The fat slows down the digestion process which helps you not get fat! Fat does not make you fat.

Instead of sugar free foods just look for foods that are low in sugar. I believe no more than 12 grams of sugar in a meal is a good number to shoot for. The main key is to have fat and protein with it. This will slow down how fast sugar is released into your blood stream.

If you simply make these small changes you will notice overall fat loss. Ask yourself; Is it worth eating these so called "diet foods" just to save a buck, ruin your health and self-esteem?
